MS Marco Polo is part of the fleet of the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages. The ship was built in 1965 as MS Aleksandr Pushkin at the Mathias- Thesen Werft in the former East-Germany. It was one of five identical sister ships that were ordered by the Baltic Shipping Company from the former Soviet Union. The ships were designed to both be able to sail regular services and cruises. It is one of the last ocean liners that is still sailing today.

In 2015 the ship celebrated its 50th birthday. This is exceptional as an average ship gets put out of service after around 40 years. At that age the maintenance costs tend to become too high, but at the moment this does not seem to be a problem for the company.

In November 2012 the ship was docked at the shipyard Antwerp Ship Repair for an annual check-up. Due to the high age of Marco Polo the ship has got to be looked after much more frequent than modern cruise ships. The ship was repainted where it was needed and the hull was fully cleaned. The propellers were also dismantled during the visit.
